Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
